Our History

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and education in the United States. The organization was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, a nurse who had served during the American Civil War.

During the war, Barton had organized efforts to provide medical care and supplies to wounded soldiers on both sides of the conflict. After the war, she went to Europe and became involved with the International Red Cross, an organization dedicated to providing aid to victims of war and natural disasters.

When Barton returned to the United States, she realized that there was a need for a similar organization in her home country. In 1881, she founded the American Red Cross with the mission of providing assistance to people affected by disasters and emergencies.

The American Red Cross played a major role in providing aid during World War I and World War II, and has since been involved in a wide range of disaster relief efforts, including hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and wildfires. The organization also provides education and training in first aid, CPR, and other life-saving skills.

Today, the American Red Cross is a prominent and respected humanitarian organization, with a network of volunteers and donors across the country. The organization remains committed to its mission of providing assistance and support to people in need, both in times of crisis and in everyday life.
